The chairman of Emohua local government area, Dr Chidi Lloyd has commended Rivers State Governor, H.E Nyesom Wike for his swift response to flood disaster in parts of Rivers State.
He said the proactive measures initiated by the Rivers State government under the leadership of Gov Nyesom Ezenwo Wike to provide the necessary support for residents of flood-ravaged communities in the State is a clear indication of effective leadership in the state, stressing that it takes a government that cares about the wellbeing of the people to show compassion to the people in emergency situations.
Dr Lloyd made the commendation when he led members of the Rivers State Flood Management Taskforce on a fact-finding visit to flood-impacted Rumuekpe communities in Emohua LGA on Tuesday, to ascertain the level of damage caused by the flood disaster in the area.
At Imogu community in Rumuekpe clan, Emohua LGA where the road linking the community and Ogbele community in Ahoada-East LGA was already submerged in the flood overflowing from the Orashi River, displacing families from their homes and overtaking farmlands, Dr Lloyd said measures are in place to have the displaced families evacuated to the community school, where medical aids and palliatives would be provided for the affected families.
The council chairman who expressed confidence in the ability of the state flood management task force under the headship of the permanent secretary in the state bureau for special services, Dr George Nweke, called for support from the task force to the flood-ravaged communities in the area, to cushion the effect of hardship occasioned by the disaster, while empathizing with victims whose homes and means of livelihood had been destroyed by the ravaging flood.
Community leaders and victims who narrated their experience said the flood disaster didn’t only sack them from their homes but also destroyed their farmlands and livestock, which are their source of livelihood while appealing to the government at all levels to come to their aid.
Addressing journalists shortly after visiting the flood-impacted areas, the chairman of the Rivers State Flood Management Taskforce, Dr George Nweke applauded Dr Chidi Lloyd for the proactive steps taken by Emohua local government council to provide temporary accommodation for families affected by the flood disaster in the area.
Dr Nweke said the delegation from the state task force has confirmed the level of damage in the area and would interface with other members to make necessary provisions for members of the affected communities, in line with the directive of the state governor, H.E Nyesom Wike.
Dr Chidi Lloyd was accompanied by the chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Emohua LGA, Hon Uche Minikwu and principal officers of the Emohua local government council.
